China (also known as the People's Republic of China) is a country in East Asia with approximately 1.4 billion inhabitants. China is the most populated country in the world, and the third largest in total area. The area of China is 9,596,961 square km (Or 3.47491942688 square miles.) (Source: Wikipedia).
The official language of China is Mandarin Chinese, and simplified as well as traditional Chinese are all written. There are many more dialects, however. The Chinese language is spoken, not only in China, but also in Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia, although it is not the official language there. The language consists of thousands of characters, made up of different strokes. The written language is exceedingly difficult, as it is not similar to English in that characters must be learned individually. Many Chinese characters are built from one another. For example, the character for fire, 火, can be combined with the character for mountain, 山, to produce 灿, which can literally translate to 'fire mountain' or volcano, but can also mean the adjective bright. This language also does not has an alphabet like most other languages.
China is a popular tourist destination because of its many historic monuments. These include the Great Wall, which was built to protect China from the Mongols, the Temple of Heaven, which was the prayer site of the royal family during summer and winter, the Terracotta Warriors, which protected the self-proclaimed first emperor in his last resting place, and Tiannanmen Square, the ancient entrance to the Imperial city.
