Woodrow 'Woody' Guthrie

Woody Guthrie (July 14th 1912-Oct 3rd 1967) was a singer-songwriter that specialized in folk music. He is well known for writing songs about politics and often performed with his slogan "This machine kills fascists" written on his guitar. His most well known song was This Land is your Land. Most of his recorded music is kept in the Library of Congress, Washington D.C.

Guthrie's main influence for his music were his experiences during the Great Depression, when he travelled around his birthplace, Oklahoma, and California with a group of displaced farmers. Throughout his life guthrie was associated with many US communist groups thoough seemingly never part of one and his music reflects this. Many musicians such as Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Bruce Springstein recognize Woody Guthrie as a huge influence.

Guthrie moved to New York City in the 1940s and stayed there until he died from complications due to Huntington's disease (a dominant gene disorder) aged 55.
